What Is a Pressure Decay Leak Test?

What a pressure decay leak test does

A pressure decay leak test checks whether an empty plastic bottle, jerry can or drum can hold air. The tester seals the mouth, fills the container with air and watches the pressure. If the pressure falls, air is escaping through a hole, a thin wall or a bad weld, and the bottle is rejected before it reaches filling.

LONGSN empty bottle leak testers work this way. The LSN-LT series covers 600 to 4,000 bottles per hour with 1, 2, 4 or 8 stations. Dedicated models handle 3 to 5 gallon water bottles, small containers and tins, and jerry cans and drums up to 330 L.

How the test runs on the machine

The bottle is located and the mouth is sealed. Air is charged into the bottle. A pressure sensor reads the pressure and watches it for a set time. A bottle that holds pressure passes and goes on to bagging or filling. A bottle that loses pressure is pushed off the line automatically.

Detection settings are stored per product on the PLC and recalled from the touch screen, so one machine can test several bottle types without rewriting the program each time.

Why bottle plants use it

A leaking bottle wastes product on the filling line and can stop the line. Finding the leak while the bottle is still empty costs less than finding it after filling. Typical users are plastic bottle manufacturers and fillers of beverage, lubricating oil, cleaning and chemical products.

Pressure decay is the method LONGSN uses on empty PE, HDPE, PP and PET bottles. Other methods exist in the wider industry, such as vacuum decay and bubble tests. Those are not what the LSN-LT series does.

What to tell us when you ask for a tester

Send your bottle sample, the material and the output you need in bottles per hour. LONGSN engineers reply with the right model, the settings for your bottle and a full quotation.
